Securing Support and Resources
With your plan complete, the next step is to present it to the company managers and the building’s property manager for approval (unless he or she is a member of the Green Team). Here’s where all that time spent on tedious documentation pays off. Items to include are:
Introductions
- Introduce the members of the team and their job functions (even if they are not all present—this step helps demonstrate the broad range of input into the program).
Background
- Present the results of the walk-through and/or waste sort.
- Illustrate with pictures and/or videos taken at the event.
- Describe the process the team used to identify and select waste reduction options.
Next steps
- Present the waste reduction plan.
- If you have not already done so, ask permission to review the current waste collection and removal process and costs.
- Highlight the potential cost savings associated with the plan.
- Ask to set up a pilot program.
- Give management ideas on how they can help (sign a company- or building-wide environmental policy, help kick off program, etc.).
Closing
- Reiterate the potential cost savings.
- Mention the likelihood of positive press and community reaction.
- Suggest a time frame to begin implementation.
- Thank them for their time and consideration.
