Safety

  • NFPA Hazard ratings for NMP are: Health — 2; Flammability — 2; Reactivity — 0; Special — NA.

  • NMP is a combustible liquid with a flash point of 91 °C.

  • Explosive limits are approximately 1-10% vapor in air.

  • NMP is not caustic.

  • NMP is chemically and thermally stable.

  • NMP may react with oxidizing reagents and strong acids.

  • NMP is a skin and eye irritant. Primary exposure routes are inhalation, skin absorption, and ingestion.

  • Personal protection equipment is required. Butyl rubber, Viton® , or equivalent gloves, aprons, and boots should be worn to prevent skin contact. Goggles or face shields are required to prevent eye contact. Respirators may be required, depending on the application.

  • On June 25, 1999 the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) of the California EPA issued a notice of intent to list NMP under Proposition 65 (22 CCR Section 12306(l) as a chemical known to cause developmental and reproductive toxicity.
