Solvent Alternatives Guide
Brushing

General Information

  • Brushing uses the mechanical rubbing action of a material to remove various types of soils.

  • Brushing is typically used for removal of the following:
    • Rust or scale
    • Excess weld metal
    • Flash
    • Oxide films
    • Paint.

  • Brushing has been used in ultra-clean applications to remove very small particles. In this case, the brush material is acting with a wipe mechanism rather than as a surface removal technique.

  • Brushes may be made of twisted wire, tampico, animal hair, abrasive impregnated plastics or rubber, or polyvinyl alcohol.

  • Brushing may be highly automated or completely manual.

  • Brushing is a good alternative whenever surface material removal is required.
