Xenon Flash Lamp Overview Xenon flash lamp cleaning uses light energy from a flash tube to burn off layers of coating materials. It is used to remove coatings from aircraft skins and has been used on both composite and metallic materials. The process has been combined with carbon dioxide pellet cleaning and used for paint stripping on aircraft. Strip rates of 1 square foot/minute have been achieved. The process may allow the removal of coatings to a certain depth instead of all the way to bare substrate. The process generates a small waste stream consisting of burnt coating materials. The process is still under development and is expensive.
