Solvent Alternatives Guide
Glycol Ethers

Environment

  • Glycol ethers are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and may be regulated in your area.

  • EPA denied a petition by the Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA) to delete five glycol ethers from the 1990 CAA Amendments' Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP) list on the basis that CMA did not provide sufficient data/analysis for EPA to determine if such emissions could cause adverse effects to human health or the environment (Jan. 13 Federal Register, p. 4164). The five chemicals are diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, triethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and triethylene glycol monobutyl ether.

  • The (Dowanol™) E-series of glycol ethers are subject to heavy regulation, specifically SARA Title III and OSHA guidelines for safe exposure levels. In comparison, the P-series currently face minimal regulatory threat.

  • SEMATECH and MIT are investigating spraying methods that use less solvent. Before purchasing equipment, look for types to minimize waste.
