Solvent Alternatives Guide
Alcohol

General Information

  • Alcohols are commonly used as drying agents for intricate assemblies.

  • Methanol and isopropanol have fair degreasing capabilities.

  • Methanol is incompatible with Viton®. With brief exposure, isopropanol is compatible with most elastomers.

  • Isopropanol is commonly used as a wipe solvent in precision cleaning.

  • Alcohols are not good for removal of nonpolar soils, e.g., waxes and oils.

  • Alcohols are incompatible with many polymers and elastomers and are photochemically reactive.

  • Isopropanol (IPA) may be used in an azeotrope of 88% IPA and 12% water. This azeotrope has a boiling point of 178 ° F; IPA is a flammable liquid at 65 ° F.

Note: Viton® is a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers.
