Alcohol
General Information
- Alcohols are commonly used as drying agents for intricate assemblies.
- Methanol and isopropanol have fair degreasing capabilities.
- Methanol is incompatible with Viton®. With brief exposure, isopropanol is compatible with most elastomers.
- Isopropanol is commonly used as a wipe solvent in precision cleaning.
- Alcohols are not good for removal of nonpolar soils, e.g., waxes and oils.
- Alcohols are incompatible with many polymers and elastomers and are photochemically reactive.
- Isopropanol (IPA) may be used in an azeotrope of 88% IPA and 12% water.
This azeotrope has a boiling point of 178 ° F; IPA is a flammable liquid
at 65 ° F.
Note: Viton® is a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers.
