Acetone

Environment

  • Acetone has been excluded from the definition of a volatile organic compound (VOC) by the U.S. EPA on the basis that it has negligible photochemical activity. This notice was published in the Federal Register (FR) on June 16, 1995, in 40 CFR Part 51, Vol. 60, No. 116, pp. 31633-31637.

  • Acetone is listed in the U.S. EPA's SNAP (Significant New Alternatives Program) as an acceptable alternative to ozone-depleting compounds for metal cleaning, electronics cleaning, and precision cleaning (59 FR 13134).

  • Acetone may be recycled by distillation, but only with equipment that is designed to distill this flammable solvent.

  • Acetone is not subject to reporting requirements under Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986, Section 313 (SARA 313), also known as the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). It was dropped from the list of toxic chemicals, effective June 16, 1995.

  • Acetone is on the list of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous wastes with an RCRA code of U0002 (Toxic Waste).
