V. Status of Department Initiatives

DENR prescribed seven core initiatives to be implemented throughout the Department in 1999. The DENR department-wide goals include the following:

• Organize a carpool information system for staff commuting to work and for DENR travel instate.
• Conduct at least one waste assessment annually in Division buildings and/or facilities.
• Eliminate virgin paper purchases – increase proportion of recycled paper and paper products purchased to 100%.
• Institute mandatory double-sided copying; where equipment makes this practice difficult, implement phase-out of old, non-double-siding machines.
• Require all new printers to print two sided.
• Require that all office equipment (computers, copiers, scanners, fax machines) purchased by DENR Divisions carry the EPA Energy Star certification.
• Encourage all outside entities to submit paper forms, reports, permits, studies, grant applications and other documents (e.g., municipalities, industries, consultants) on printed double-sided on 30% post-consumer recycled paper or electronically.
