II. Employee Initiatives

There are a variety of individual sustainability initiatives that have been implemented throughout DENR, both at employee work sites and at their homes.

  • Recycling paper, newspapers, plastic, glass, aluminum and metal cans, cardboard, junk mail, magazines, and envelopes
  • Composting at work and at home
  • Reducing waste by buying things with the least packaging, purchasing in bulk and reusing plastic and paper bags, containers and jars
  • Walking and biking to work
  • Carpooling
  • Bringing their lunch or walking to lunch on ozone code red days
  • Using reusable plates, cups and flatware instead of styrofoam, plastic and paper products
  • Relocating closer to work
  • Participating in the Division of Air Quality’s Ozone Action Days Telework Project
  • Conserving electricity by reducing the use of AC and heat
  • Recycling unwanted gifts through silent auctions to raise money for charities
  • Participating in food recovery programs

DENR’s employees are committed to environmental sustainability concepts and want to help the Department become a model of sustainability for all state government agencies.
