Edison Electric Institute

The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) is the trade association representing investor-owned electric utilities. Its member companies represent approximately 79 percent of all the electricity in the country and service 76 percent of all consumers. EEI represents its members primarily for Congress, federal agencies, and other organizations when electric utility interests are at issue or at stake.

EEI has developed a policy position on pollution prevention programs that states: "We believe that the goal of Pollution Prevention programs should be to use technically feasible and cost effective methods to eliminate or reduce release of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminates, thus reducing hazards to public health and the environment." Methods of accomplishing this goal include: (1) source reduction and product substitution, (2) recovery, recycling, byproduct use and/or reuse of materials, (3) environmentally sound treatment and/or disposal, and (4) efficient generation and use of energy including development of new technologies that result in environmentally beneficial impacts.

EEI sponsors workshops for its member companies and develops case studies. The Pollution Prevention (P2) Subcommittee operates under the Environment and Energy Committee. The Subcommittee is charged to monitor and affect P2 activities being undertaken by the government and private sectors. The group also makes P2 policy recommendations and provides the rest of EEI's membership appropriate P2 information.
