Electronic Industries Association
The Electronic Industries Association (EIA) is the oldest and largest trade association
of the electronics industry, comprised of more than 1250 member companies representing the
full spectrum of the U.S. manufacturers in the electronics industry. EIA member companies
design, manufacture, distribute, and sell electronic parts, components, equipment, and
systems for the consumer, commercial, industrial, military, and space use. EIA's primary
mission is to enhance the competitiveness of the American producer. Among other things,
the Association: stimulates public awareness of the vital role of the electronics industry
in national defense, space exploration, communication, education, entertainment, the
evolution of industrial technologies, the improvement of living standards, and the rise in
the Gross National Product; coordinates and conveys the views of EIA members to
appropriate bodies concerning legislation and governmental regulations; advances the
growth and technological progress of the industry by providing assistance with the
development and dissemination of technical standards, the registration of new products,
and participation in national and international standardization; as well as collects and
tabulates marketing data on production and sales of electronic products.
Currently, EIA does not have a pollution prevention policy statement. Nonetheless,
position papers on various environmental issues specify that EIA supports environmental
programs that promote the prevention of the generation of waste, and that efforts to
proactively design for the environment are a key part of this goal. EIA supports
flexibility in the implementation of environmental protection laws and regulation as a
means of achieving environmentally sound and economically efficient solutions in the
manufacture, use, and disposal of electronic products and components. EIA's Environmental
Issues Council (EIC) serves as a forum for the industry to address environmental issues of
importance, including legislative, regulatory, and policy issues. Among other matters, the
EIC focuses on Design for Environment and product end-of-life management programs,
recycling issues, and pollution prevention in manufacturing operations. EIA and its
members are active on EPA's Common Sense Initiative and other efforts to promote pollution
prevention.
