American Petroleum Institute
The American Petroleum Institute (API) is
a non-profit organization with over 200 members engaged in all aspects of petroleum
manufacturing including exploration and production, refining, marketing, and
transportation.
STEP -- Strategies for Today's Environmental Partnership is a long-term commitment by
API to further improve environmental, health, and safety performance. The STEP program is
built in the Guiding Environmental Principles that were incorporated into API's bylaws in
1990. Recommended Management Practices and a recommended Self-Assessment Process have been
approved and implemented. Along with API's existing programs and standards the management
practices help the industry to realize the goals the industry set for itself in adopting
the environmental principles: preventing pollution, operating safely, community
involvement, maintaining crisis readiness, and product safety. Forty-nine companies are
now participating in this program including some of the nation's largest oil corporations.
API also publishes an annual environmental progress report for the industry.
