American Iron & Steel Institute
The American Iron and
Steel Institute (AISI) is the principal trade association for the American steel
industry and includes members from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
AISI exists to promote steel as the material of choice and to enhance the
competitiveness of the North American steel industry through programs in market
development, manufacturing technology, public policy and technology.
AISI "supports efforts to provide incentives for increased recycling of materials
to conserve natural resources, decrease energy consumption, and minimization waste."
Towards these ends, AISI sponsors pollution prevention projects and programs which contain
major environmental components. Most of the projects involve development of new processes
that are more environmentally benign. Many of these process changes result in a lower
volume of waste products and/or a reduction in the toxicity of these wastes. AISI is also
developing technologies to recycle what wastes remain.
In addition, AISI is developing an iron and steel brownfields site redevelopment
process that includes the design of a model redevelopment authority. AISI also
participates in EPA's Common Sense Initiative.
The Institute is formulating a "good neighbor" policy to break down barriers
between communities and facilities so that they can jointly address opportunities for
environmental improvement.
