Development and Demonstration of an Integrated Wastewater
And Processing Waste Management System for Trout Production

The Animal and Poultry Waste Management Center

A prototype wastewater filtering-composting system was developed to produce a composted product from waste generated by trout farms. Manure from the settling area at the end of raceways in which trout are raised is pumped to compost bins, where it is mixed with wood chips and composted. The resulting compost may be used as a soil amendment or growing media for various nursery and greenhouse crops. Remaining effluent is collected and sprayed on nearby fields for irrigation. The prototype system worked well, and a demonstration system is being evaluated on a Transylvania County trout farm.
