You can grow cleaner dirt!

On April 26, 2003, the Heavy Metals Remediation Committee (HMRC), sponsored the second symposium on the subject of cleaning up our soil. The meeting was attended by over a hundred people. The speakers were:

Rita Schenck, Ph.D, Executive Director of the Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) and an expert on the toxicity and cycling of heavy metals. She will summarize the studies done on the island and has many useful tip sheets and other handouts.

Paul Stamets is a Mycologist with Fungi Perfecti who has written extensively on medicinal mushroom cultivation. He recently identified and proved fungi’s capacity to bioremediate contaminated soils by organically breaking down pollutants. He’s an informative and entertaining speaker who you won’t forget.

Mary Marth has been an organic gardener for 18 years and is one of King County’s Master Gardeners. As Principal of “Green Lady Gardening” her mission is to help people understand good soil and gardening practices, and their relationship with the environment.

The symposium wes sponsored by the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council’s HMRC and paid for, in part, by a public participation grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
