Summary of Work Experience

Mr. Vanderpool has 16 years experience working in the environmental field with specialties in aerosol dynamics and air pollution control. Skills include project management, study design, implementation, and presentation. Mr. Vanderpool has served as a consultant to various industries as well as to the U.S. EPA.

Professional Experience

1992 to Date. Research Triangle Institute, Research Triangle Park, NC
Research Aerosol Scientist. Center for Engineering and Environmental Technology. Involved in evaluation of EPA Wide Range Aerosol Classifier system for characterizing ambient particle size distributions. Designed structural support system for 3-D phase Doppler anemometer installation in EPA wind tunnel facility. Designed and supervised PM10 saturation monitoring study. Conducted field study to evaluate monitoring methods to assess exposure to environmental lead.

1988 to 1992. University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.
Graduate Research Assistant. Doctoral dissertation involved design, calibration, and field evaluation of an automated sampler for quantifying metal-based particulates. Unit is capable of sampling from both ducted airstreams as well as from workplace or ambient environments. A patent is pending for this device. Consulting activities included development of a portable constant-output aerosol generator for the field verification of optical particle counter or electrical aerosol analyzer performance.

1984 - 1988. Environmental Engineering Consultants, Inc., Gainesville, FL.
Consulting Engineer. Involved with a number of projects in the environmental sciences with emphasis on fine particle sampling and characterization and calibration of air sampling instruments. Risk assessment in both occupational and non-occupational settings related to asbestos exposure from various asbestos-containing building products. Duties included design and supervision of field sampling tests as well as electron and optical microscopy analysis of collected air samples. Conducted field tests of military jet engine exhausts including evaluation of an in-stock diffusion classifier for exhaust characterization. Performed laboratory calibration of a 10-stage low-pressure impactor designed for in-stack particle sizing. Incorporated compressible fluid flow theory into a computer model for the prediction of impactor performance at non-standard temperature and pressure conditions.

1981 - 1983. University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.
Graduate Research Assistant. Master's thesis involved calibration of four, large-particle Wide Range Aerosol Impactors for the EPA including the development of large-particle generation techniques.

1980 - 1981. University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.
Research Assistant. Evaluated computer algorithm for inversion of diffusion classifier data. Conducted laboratory evaluation of an aerosol generator used by the EPA for human exposure experiments.
