The Research Triangle Institute’s (RTI) Aerosol Exposure Program investigates the sources, routes, and concentrations of personal exposures to particles and particle-based contaminants. Combining research scientists, who have experience in all phases of particle research, with excellent experimental and particle characterization research tools, provides an ideal setting to conduct particle studies and aerosol exposure research. The recent concern over the potential adverse health effects of airborne particles less than 2.5 µm in diameter ( referred to as PM2.5 ) has placed a greater emphasis on not only the best methods of assessing particle exposure, but relating particle sources to various exposure scenarios. The Aerosol Exposure Program is a key component of an integrated total exposure program at RTI that incorporates all media’s (air, dermal, water, food). The ongoing exposure research at RTI’s Center for Engineering and Environmental Technology has positioned RTI as the leader in both particle characterization and aerosol exposure assessment.
