Philip A. Lawless, PhD

Education

Experience

1985 to date. Research Triangle Institute. Senior Research Physicist. Developer of a simulator for indoor air quality to run on microcomputers. Project leader for sampling high concentration particle streams in an industrial product line. Developed advanced computer models for V-I characteristics of electrostatic precipitators and user-friendly performance calculations. Project manager and principal investigator in studies of aerosol growth at reduced pressures. Investigation of corona as a chemical detoxifying process (theory and experiment).

1974 to 1985. Research Triangle Institute. Physicist. Carried out theoretical, laboratory, and field studies on electrostatic phenomena, especially industrial precipitation. Studied and evaluated a plasma chromatograph for explosives detection, and conducted plasma chromatograph research for detection of certain atmospheric pollutants and for measurement of small particle mobilities. Studied operating characteristics of electrostatic precipitators, and conducted comprehensive computer modeling of precipitator operation. Also was responsible for laboratory investigations of abnormal precipitator conditions, and for evaluating sampling techniques for personal monitors for atmospheric pollutants.

1973 to 1974. Duke University, Durham, NC. Research Associate. Developed refrigeration techniques for ultra-low-temperature experiments.
