The largest industries (measured
by number of manufacturing companies) for
Massachusetts are Printing and Publishing (27),
Fabricated Metals (34), Industrial Machinery
(35), Electronics (36), and Instruments (38).
Other important and emerging industries include:
Polymers abd Advanced Materials and
Telecommunications, which are not represented by
specific SICs. These towns represent over 30%
of the entire manufacturing community in
Massachusetts. All other cities have less than
150 manufacturing facilities.
Additional demographic and survey data
identifies large numbers of plastics and
metalworking companies in Massachusetts. Both of
these industries are dominated by small firms,
and many have been dependent on defense
expenditures. While metalworking includes
high-quality commercial products ranging from
industrial machinery and equipment to fabricated
metal components, approximately 85% of the
manufacturers in the Commonwealth are contract
shops without proprietary technology or a
product. They provide contract or service
manufacturing to other manufacturers.
A significant number of small manufacturing
facilities also have many business and
manufacturing issues and have very limited
capital and human resources with which to address
those issues. These resources include training,
market data, and time to implement change.
The largest concentration of manufacturers are
located in the following Massachusetts cities:
