C. Rinsing

Parts rinsing can occur at various stages of a plating operation. To reduce the volume and toxicity of its wastewater discharge, a plating shop can:

  • reduce rinse water contamination from plating bath solution by using drain boards to direct process bath solution back to process tanks, or adding air knives over rinse tanks;
  • use countercurrent rinsing (i.e., when a workpiece is rinsed repeatedly in several tanks, introduce fresh water to the last rinse tank only and use the overflow from the last rinse tank as the supply source for an earlier rinse tank) or
  • recycle water by implementing closed loop countercurrent rinsing
