Welcome to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) "Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Factbook - Internet Version," an electronic reference containing over 250 screens of information about household waste management practices. This site includes information on the federal MSW program, as well as profiles of individual state programs, and compares MSW practices in major developed nations.

The MSW Factbook's tables, charts, and maps include facts and figures about source reduction, recycling, land disposal, and MSW combustion. They also include MSW generation and composition data. In addition, the Factbook contains the complete text of EPA's MSW landfill regulations, lists of MSW periodicals and government publications, and information on trade and environmental associations. Whenever possible, the Factbook also provides names, addresses, phone numbers, and web site locations to obtain additional information.

Originally, the Factbook was only available as a Windows application. The Internet version allows EPA to update information as new data becomes available. However, users with text-only browsers, browsers that do not support tables or client-side image maps, or slow Internet connections may wish to download the disk version.

EPA's intention in developing the "MSW Factbook" was to produce a document that is both useful and fun to use. We are interested in your opinions of this site. Please let us know what works, doesn't work, other information you would like to see included, and any other ideas or comments that you have. Thank you.
