The Direct Marketing
Association is the largest trade association in the direct marketing and database
marketing field with more than 3,600 members companies from the United States and 49 other
nations. Founded in 1917, its members include catalogers, financial services, book and
magazine publishers, retail stores, industrial manufacturers, and a host of other vertical
segments, as well as the service industries that support them. In 1997, direct marketing
is estimated to generate more than $1.2 million in sales to consumers and businesses.
The Association recently published The DMA Corporate Environmental Stewardship
Challenge, a tool to help direct mail companies reduce their impact on the
environment. DMA also maintains lists of individuals who prefer not to be solicited
through the mail. Consumers who would like to be removed from most national catalog and
other mailing lists can write to Mail Preference Service, c/o DMA, P.O. Box 9008,
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008.
