American Forest & Paper Association
The American Forest
& Paper Association (AF&PA) is the national trade group that represents forest
and paper companies. The industry's commitment to exploring future improvement in the
environmental arena is outlined in the vision document, Agenda 2020 -- A Technology Vision
and Research Agenda for America's Forest, Wood and Paper Industry. The document poses key
strategies to address challenges in six areas: (1) sustainable forest management, (2)
environmental performance, (3) energy performance, (4) improved capital effectiveness, (5)
recycling, and (6) sensors and controls.
The forest products industry has been engaged in significant pollution prevention
activities for more than 40 years. Most recently, AF&PA adopted a set of comprehensive
Environmental, Health, and Safety Principles and a Sustainable Forestry Initiative, which
become mandatory for AF&PA membership beginning in 1996. For over 20 years, AF&PA
has recognized outstanding efforts put forth by forest products companies through its
Environmental and Energy Achievement Awards program. AF&PA is currently working on
developing a specific, prioritized list of pre-competitive, collaborative research
objectives to improve the industry's energy efficiency and productivity, advance its
technological leadership, and enhance its global competitive position. AF&PA members
have already identified and implemented P2 and pollution reduction activities including:
(1) process and technology modifications, (2) chemical substitution, (3) increased energy
efficiency and innovative practices, (4) recycling and re-use, (5) stewardship of natural
resources, and (6) increased efficiency of control measures.
