How to use Default Duplex successfully
Simply enabling default duplex on a copier would probably result in many
people being confused about the change. Few copiers are currently set to
default duplex and so few people have experience with default duplex machines.
To alleviate this problem, at LBNL, we created labels that were placed
in several places on the machine (including one right next to the "Start"
button).
The labels
- identified that the machine was changed to default duplex.
- indicated exactly how to select single-sided copies.
- gave a name and phone number of someone to contact with questions or comments.
Following are the labels we used.
The first was next to the "sort" button to remind people of the change.
The graphics on the last figure were taken from the copier manual with
the "1-sided" one exactly what appears on the copier's control panel.
During our tests no one actually phoned or emailed with a question
or comment, but having the contact information there probably makes the
change seem more personal and so defuses some objections to it.
In the locations where
we enabled default duplex, a few people strongly objected to it,
a few were quite pleased, and most people seemed fairly indifferent, once
they got used to it.
In a survey we conducted, most people reported getting
used to default duplex within a week.
If you enable default duplex, let us know what you learn from the experience
so that others can benefit.
