Goals

Goal 1: Promote wider adoption of EMSs across a range of organizations and settings.

Supporting Actions:

  • Develop EMS implementation tools and an EMS information clearinghouse (e.g., website);
  • Partner with and leverage other EMS assistance providers (e.g., manufacturing extension partnership and universities, PEER (Public Entity EMS Resource) Center) to gain maximum results;
  • Develop the National Environmental Performance Track to provide incentives to organizations to recognize and reward adoption of effective EMSs; and
  • Tailor EMS tools and services to meet the needs of select sectors and promote EMSs in select geographic areas.
Goal 2: Promote excellence in the practice of environmental management systems inside and outside the Agency.

Supporting Actions:

  • Conduct internal EMS training program and support network;
  • Implement EMSs at Agency facilities in accordance with Executive Order 13148 and support EMS implementation within other federal agencies;
  • Continued research on performance attributes of EMSs; and
  • Participate in national and international EMS forums, including Multi-State Working Group on EMSs and U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO/TC 207 (TAG207) on Environmental Management, and ISO Technical Committee 207 on Environmental Management.
Goal 3: Fuller integration of EMSs into Agency programs and activities.

Supporting Actions:

  • Consideration of EMSs in Agency planning and budgeting processes;
  • Incorporation of EMSs into core Agency programs and activities;
  • Incorporation of EMSs into compliance assurance and enforcement activities; and
  • Incorporation of EMSs into pollution prevention programs.
