the following:
- An Implementation Guide for Small and Medium-Sized Organizations. These links briefly describe the key concepts and elements of an EMS, including keys to a successful EMS and the EMS model of policy, planning, implementation, checking, and review. Full versions of this document can be found on Voluntary Environmental Management Systems/ISO 14001-Publications.
- Emerging Role of Associations as Mentors (PDF 260KB)
developed by the National Education & Training Foundation (NEETF), documents the dialogue that occurred at NEETF's National Forum on the Emerging Role of Associations as Mentors, held on March 28, 2000, in Washington, DC. The goal of the Forum was to explore the role that trade associations play in encouraging their members to become more environmentally responsible. One of the recurring themes of the forum was the motivation of companies and trade associations to develop industry environmental codes and the benefits of doing so. Industry codes can often serve as the catalyst for EMS development.
- Information on ISO 14000:
- National Database on
Environmental Management Systems. The University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Environmental Law Institute,
supported by the EPA, are conducting a project to determine how
implementing EMSs affects the environmental and economic
performance of public and private facilities. This site includes
information about the project, as well as public reports and
research papers.
- Standardizing Excellence: Working with Smaller Businesses to Implement Environmental Management Systems (PDF 468KB)
was developed by the National Environmental Education & Training Foundation (NEETF) through a grant from EPA. The goal of the EMS Assistance Strategy Initiative was to identify practical and effective ways to promote, design, and assist small and medium-sized organizations with implementing an EMS. Toward this end, workshops were held to examine current experiences and develop a set of recommendations to help guide future work in promoting the use of EMSs to smaller entities.
- Final Report: The US EPA Environmental Management System Pilot Program for Local Government Entities (PDF 2.1MB)
documents the results of an EPA sponsored EMS pilot program to test the applicability and benefit of an EMS on environmental performance, compliance, pollution prevention and stakeholder involvement in local government operations. Prepared by the Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF) through a grant from EPA's Office of Water, the document provides information on EMS development and implementation, average resource commitments, benefits and barriers, and sources of additional information to learn more about EMSs.
