Theilen Farms

Farm Description

Theilen Farms is owned and operated by Eldon and Linda Theilen and our son Jeremy Theilen. Our daughter Kristy is in college. We have operated the farm for 25 years. Most of the farm has been owned by Linda’s family for over 100 years.

Our farm is located in Colfax County, Nebraska, one mile east of Schuyler. The farm consists of 800 acres of farmable land. We produce about 500 acres of irrigated corn and 300 acres of irrigated soybeans. We also operate a 140-sow farrow to finish hog facility that produces approximately 2500 hogs per year, and we also produce show pigs for some of the local 4H kids for their 4H projects.

Environmental Policy Statement

At Theilen Farms, we try to continually improve and raise the most environmentally safe products we can. We comply with all the regulations. We want our farm to be completely sustainable. To do this, we have an annual plan that everyone on the farm is responsible for knowing and following. The annual plan makes us a little better every year, by reducing pollution and conserving natural resources. We follow the IERE program that uses life cycle assessment to continually improve.

Environmental Aspects

The Significant Environmental Aspects of our farm are the use of fossil fuels and electricity, the use of fertilizer and gene modified organisms, and the use of purchased feed.

Compliance

We are subject to the county noxious weed program and to FIFRA (the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act). To the best of our knowledge, we are compliant to all these requirements.

Goals for 2002

During 2002, we have the following environmental goals.

  1. Begin a grid soil sampling program to better manage fertilizers
  2. Test soils where manure is applied and start up a tracking program for manure application

This is our first year in the IERE program, so we have no report on previous years’ goals.
