Hitachi Zosen ORFA-RDF System (Municipal Solid Waste - Recycling System)

[Abstract]

ORFA system, which was developed by ORFA TECHNOLOGY AG in Switzerland, is called as the best recycling system of municipal solid waste in the world. Our company has developed and begins the sales of two-Hitachi Zosen systems based on this ORFA system.

One is a RDF ( Refuse Derived Fuel ) production system, which we call "Hitachi Zosen ORFA-RDF system". Another is a Japanese ORFA system fit to Japanese (include Asia's)- refuse and recycle market, which we call "Hitachi Zosen- ORFA system".

[Flow and Process]

"Original-ORFA system" is shown as the following flow sheet.

The process is mainly divided into the following two sections considering the point just after the dryer.

    The half upper process : Cutting in small pieces and Drying (Making fluff-refuse)
    The half lower process : Separation and Classification of above fluff-refuse
In the upper flow, municipal solid refuse packed in a vinyl bag is cut roughly by the two-axial shredder. And these cut refuse is separated by the screen and cut into smaller pieces by the hammer mill & the cutter mill separately. Then these fine refuse, of which size is about 1~3 cm, is dried to be less than 10% moisture by the dryer.

In the lower flow, fluff-refuse (small and dried refuse) is separated again by screens and treated by various separators and classifiers.

By these process, ORFA system can separate municipal solid waste into about 10 kinds of very pure refuse. Of course, magnetic and nonferrous material are separated by each separators.

By the way, Japanese refuse, also Asian refuse, has much moisture (about 50%) rather than Swiss refuse (about 30%) nearly the same as USA and European refuse. So we modify ORFA system and change the location of dryer to be after the two-axial shredder in the flow sheet.

For ordinary ORFA-RDF system, the half upper process can be used directly and is connected to a RDF machine. Using this RDF machine, refuse (fluff) can be pressed on a cylindrical shape (like a chalk) of which diameter is about 1~2 cm.

[Features]

ORFA system is the best recycle system of municipal solid waste and its main features as follows.
    (1) Separation and classification quality is very high rather than other systems 
        in the world.

(2) Kind of classified refuse can be get more 10.

(3) All divided refuse can be recycled by making into various materials.

(4) Technology of ORFA system has been established in the Philadelphia plant in USA, of which capacity is 20 t/h ( two lines of 10 t/h).

ORFA-RDF system provides also a high quality of RDF.

[Capacity]

Standard design capacities for one line are 1~5 and 10 t/h. And larger plant can be provided by a combination of its standard capacities like the above Philadelphia plant.

[Application Field]

In Japan, RDF is a very hot topic in considering a recycle of refuse, reduction of land filling and so on. RDF made by municipal solid waste in Japan has a calorie of about 4000 kcal/ kg. Then Japanese customer wants a thermal recycling by electric power generation plant of RDF. ORFA-RDF plant is suitable for these need and can make RDF of good quality.

By the way, the power generation plant of RDF may become to be uneconomical if a treat amount is less than about 100 t/day of RDF. So small plant of RDF should be used for making other thermal energy, for instance a hot water distributing system, a cooling & warming of building, a hot swimming pool, a hot spring and so on.

Except the case of a large hot water distribution system, recycling amount of RDF becomes very small for each utility and it is very difficult to recycle all RDF. For this reason, our company had developed "HITACHI ZOSEN- ORFA system" means "Effective Microorganisms" and is used for reducing odor of raw waste and to making compost from fiber refuse. This Japanese ORFA system can be used actuary like the following condition.

<Utilization of classified waste>

Clean RDF without plastics can be made in this case, where ordinary RDF contains PVC (Poly-vinyl chloride) and needs to consider a countermeasure against harmful combustion gases of RDF.

Concerning separated plastics, "Oil Reclamation System" of our product can be used to change it into liquid fuel and this fuel can be used for a dryer of "ORFA plant". By considering these various utilities, whole refuse will be recycled entirely.
