Bronze Pumps For Fire Trucks

Equipment Description

Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) is used for fire fighting at many activities but is corrosive to iron. AFFF is reducing the lifespan of the iron pumps on KME fire engines to three years. Water pumps made of or plated with bronze are manufactured and available. The bronze pumps have a projected lifespan of 15-20 years even with use of AFFF.

Benefits of Use

The bronze pumps cost twice as much as the iron pumps, but the bronze pumps are expected to last roughly six times as long. This change could be implemented Navy-wide.
