| SITUATION: |
Vytron management had heard about the Manufacturing Skills Campus at
the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology through their association
with the Private Industry Council. A senior vice president of the company
came to Oak Ridge, toured the campus, and decided to send a couple of employees
to training sessions at the Skills Campus. One employee attended the course
on electric motor control, and another attended a course on personal computer
maintenance. |
| PROJECT: |
The company has a policy of providing additional training for its employees.
The training sessions attended by the Vytron employees at the Skills Campus
were not tied to a specific project because one of the company's philosophies
is that training makes for better employees and that as machines get more
and more sophisticated, employees must be kept trained to increasingly
higher levels of sophistication.
Vytron has been very pleased with the training received at the Skills
Campus. Cliff Majors, senior vice president of the company, said that prior
to the employee receiving the personal computer maintenance training, the
company had to pay an outside firm to perform maintenance on its computers.
Additionally, the training in electric motor control has allowed the
company to save time in correcting problems as they arise with extruding
equipment. |
| RESULTS: |
"We have people who can trouble-shoot equipment problems. Before the
training it might have taken three or four hours to get a machine back
up and running. Now, with the training, they can cut that time to 30 minutes.
If you have equipment go out, it saves time if you have people who can
work on it and get it back into production quickly. It's hard to say if
training will save you $1,000 or $10,000. But it helps to have the knowledge
that you can fix problems when they arise because you have people who,
because of training, have the skills and knowledge to solve problems,"
Majors said.
