SITUATION: |
TIMET produces welded titanium tubing for worldwide sales and was interested
in producing tubing for a German company. TUV, the pressure vessel regulatory
agency in Germany, requires specific testing by the tubing manufacturer
to meet their stringent requirements. |
PROJECT: |
TIMET uses a pneumatic pressure test method to test welded tubing.
TUV wanted a mathematical model along with an actual demonstration of the
test procedure to determine that it meets specifications. TIMET contacted
The University of Tennessee's Center for Industrial Services and was referred
to the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology where a technical
expert created the mathematical model for TIMET to submit to TUV for approval.
|
RESULTS: |
The technical assistance rendered to TIMET and the mathematical model
provided by ORCMT have allowed the company to submit its test procedures
to TUV for approval. TUV has scheduled an audit, and, if approved, the
testing procedure will allow TIMET to supply titanium tubing to the German
marketplace.
The company estimated that the technical assistance rendered helped
the company retain four jobs, increase sales by up to $100,000, and avoid
sales losses of up to $500,000 in 1994 and 1995. Scott Johnson, general
manager, said that the quality of the service was good and that "it
was what we were looking for." |
Technical assistances provided to the private sector by the Oak Ridge
Centers for Manufacturing Technology (ORCMT) and its manufacturing extension
partners throughout the United States.
