SITUATION: |
Sensitron Semiconductor, a division of RSM Electron Power, Inc., a
manufacturer of power rectifiers and power hybrids for military and aerospace
applications, wanted to eliminate its etching process, eliminate the use
of Freon to clean wax from parts, and reduce the amount of chemical wastes
generated from manufacturing processes. Looking for solutions to these
problems, RSM called the National Technology Transfer Center and was referred
to the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology. |
PROJECT: |
An ORCMT staff member talked with staff at RSM to determine exactly
what the company's needs were and the best way to meet those needs. From
that fact-finding consultation, ORCMT staff conducted a number of tests
and suggested a new solvent for cleaning parts and proposed a plasma etching
process as a final cleaning step. |
RESULTS: |
RSM adopted both suggestions for an overall improvement in manufacturing
process. The company has eliminated the use of Freon in the wax cleaning
and ceramic etching process. Labor costs have also been reduced. The consultation
with ORCMT saved the company an estimated $40,000 per year.
Dr. Yunji Corcoran, an engineer with RSM, said that her company, like
every company, is constantly trying to reduce costs in order to be more
competitive. "The project to eliminate the use of Freon and reduce waste
was a very big project for RSM. The help of the ORCMT staff has meant
a substantial cost savings to the company and made it more competitive.
As a very small business we have limited resources; the program is very
beneficial to our company," Dr. Corcoran said. |
