| SITUATION: |
Rawal Devices, a small start-up company, makes the APR control, a capacity
modulator and energy saving control device for air conditioning applications.
The device can be built into new air conditioning units or retrofitted
to existing units. Rawal wanted an independent test to verify both effectiveness
and energy savings resulting from the use of the device and sent one of
them to the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology Center
at the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology (ORCMT) for testing.
The device functions like a cruise control on an automobile and automatically
varies the btu capacity of the system by changing the kilo-watt input to
the compressor to match changing load. At the same time, the APR control
holds the thermostat setting, resulting in constant temperature and stablilized
relative humidity in the area being air conditioned. |
| PROJECT: |
The energy consumption and efficiency of a standard 12.5-ton unit in
use at ORCMT was recorded for one week under varying conditions. The APR
device was then installed and the same unit monitored and recorded under
the same conditions. The two sets of data were then compared. |
| RESULTS: |
Tests showed that use of the APR device resulted in a 19.8 percent
energy savings. Davis Rawal, inventor of the APR and president of
the company, said the independent test of the device at Oak Ridge documented
his own findings that the device could mean significant energy savings
and could mean significant economic benefit to his company because of increased
sales.
Rawal said his company plans to built a second production facility and
could add as many as 10 jobs in 1998. He estimated that confirmation
of energy savings has expanded his mark by tenfold and could see sales
increases of up to $500,000 in 1997 and perhaps $2 million in 1998.
"Every owner of a unit air conditioner (an estimated 60 million existing
and six million new units each year) is a potential customer," he
said. He rated the technical assistance from ORCMT as excellent. |
