SITUATION: |
Plasma Processes, Inc., needed technical assistance in the thermal
spray of beryllium coatings onto copper heat sinks that would be used in
nuclear applications. Through contacts at technical conferences,
the company was referred to the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology
(ORCMT). |
PROJECT: |
ORCMT provided beryllium-sprayed samples that were then analyzed and
used to demonstrate the various aspects of the technically challenging
process. ORCMT then worked with the company on how to best use beryllium
for their purposes. |
RESULTS: |
Timothy McKechnie, president of Plasma Processes, Inc., said work resulting
from the collaboration with ORCMT is continuing. A $500,000 increase
in sales over two and one-half years is anticipated, as well as the creation
of two new jobs. There is also the possibility of developing a new
product line.
"Plasma Processes, Inc. , received fantastic results. The technical
people were very knowledgeable and capable, and the results have made a
significant impact on our small business. We searched throughout
the U.S. and could not find the expertise of ORCMT at any other location,"
McKechnie said. |
