ORPAC, Inc..

COMPANY/LOCATION: ORPAC, Inc., Oak Ridge, Tennessee
PRODUCT: coatings, pastes, stuccos and solids for high temperature applications
YEARS IN BUSINESS: 2 and contractors
EMPLOYEES:

SITUATION:   ORPAC had developed a CERALBOND-BN as a low-cost substitute for hot pressed boron nitrate and the market response for the new product required a study to determine the machinability parameters of the material. The company was aware of the technical assistance programs available through the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology (ORCMT) and called the centers to arrange for the assistance.

PROJECT:       Machining experts at ORCMT conducted a detailed machining study that determined the limitations of CERALBOND-BN for machine parts including tool speed, and the degree of difficulty of machining both simple and complex geometry shapes.

RESULTS:       The machine study allowed the company to clearly define the potential applications for the product thereby saving the company both time and money in direct research toward new and better solutions to customer requirements.

Helen Williams, development engineer for ORPAC, said that after the project was scheduled for action, the company got a verbal report and physical evidence in a very timely manner and had a written report within one or two weeks.
