SITUATION: |
Seeking technical assistance with a remanufacturing project for an
existing corrugating roller, Corrugating Roll Corporation wanted to know
before embarking on the project what kind of problems, if any, they might
encounter in remanufacturing the roller. The company wanted to know if
they were on safe ground in the rebuilding project in order to avoid any
problems in either the remanufacturing or the use of the remanufactured
roller when it was put in service. The company contacted The University
of Tennessee's Center for Industrial Services, which referred them to the
Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology (ORCMT). |
PROJECT: |
An ORCMT engineer conducted a finite element analysis on an existing
corrugating roll design, and this result answered several questions and
reinforced some of the company's ideas about stress concentration in the
design, manufacture, and operation of the roller. ORCMT's analysis suggested
that the steel rollers used by box board manufacturers can be remanufactured,
thereby reducing scrap, saving energy, reducing waste streams, and saving
both the company and their customer money. |
RESULTS: |
Steve Sharp, manager of operations engineering, said the technical
assistance from ORCMT was excellent. "Being able to rebuild the rollers
opens up for Corrugating Roll Corporation a new market, which means that
our workload may increase, which means we add more people and more equipment."
He estimated that the technical assistance helped retain a couple of
jobs in 1996 and 1997 and could mean adding several jobs over the next
two years. Additionally, the project could help reduce the company's
production costs by up to $100,000 in 1996 and $500,000 in 1997, along
with increasing sales by up to $100,000 in 1996 and potentially $500,000
in 1997. "An excellent program. I highly recommend this program to
anyone in manufacturing and design," Sharp said. |
