| SITUATION: |
Control Solutions provides temperature- and humidity-controlled laboratories.
These turnkey services include design, engineering, installation, certification,
service, and single-source responsibility for lab performance to specification.
Labs designed and installed operate from 68°F, ±0.05°F,
with precision gradient control. |
| PROJECT: |
Control Solutions was the contractor for the Oak Ridge Center for Manufacturing
Technology's dimensional standards laboratory. This standards laboratory
was established under the Department of Energy's technology transfer initiative
as a cooperative agreement between the Y-12 National Security Complex and the National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The laboratory was a requirement
for the successful implementation of a program to allow
staff to calibrate
end standards and step gauges under accuracy certified by NIST.
The project was initiated under performance-based specifications for
the three-area laboratory, which includes a dimensional inspection room
and two coordinate measuring machine rooms. Temperature and humidity controls
in the areas were required to allow the dimensional inspection area to
operate at 68°F, ±0.25°F, and each CMM room at 68°F,
±0.05°F, with relative humidity at 40 percent and cleanliness
at Class 10,000. Because a temperature control specification of ±0.05°F
had never been attempted before as defined by the DOE prime contractor for Y-12,
the companies collaborated on the design. The laboratory is now operational. |
| RESULTS: |
Based on its performance in designing and building the dimensional
inspection laboratory at ORCMT, Control Solutions is known as the leader
in the precision laboratory industry. The company has been selected
to install precision labs at NIST and in private industry, which has meant
increased sales of an estimated $1 million and the addition of four employees.
"The people at ORCMT were committed to the success of the project from
the beginning. Their cooperation and assistance ensured a final product
that operates better than specification," said Douglas J. Cooper, national
sales manager for Control Solutions. |
