Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle

The Y-12 National Security Complex has been selected as a major subcontractor for work on the U.S. Marine Corps Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV). AAAV will serve as a weapons platform for one of the Marines' most challenging missions: landing on a hostile beach.

AAAV will be capable of transporting 18 Marines and a crew of three over water at speeds up to 29 mph. On land, AAAV will  achieve speeds up to 45 mph.

As part of the demonstration and validation phase of the project, the Oak Ridge will build three prototype planing hulls for AAAV, which will use a planing hull propelled by two water jets. Oak Ridge's work will be conducted in cooperation with General Dynamics Land Systems Division, the prime contractor for the $216 million AAAV demonstration and validation contract.

Oak Ridge was selected for the project because of the manufacturing skills of its craftspeople, the technical skills of its engineers, and its proven expertise and capabilities in:

  • Preproduction manufacturing improvement
  • Integrated product teamwork
  • Technically demanding welding technology
  • Machining and inspection
  • Transfer of manufacturing process technology to private sector

In recognition of Y-12's diverse, integrated capabilities and its commitment
to succeeding with high-risk projects, the U.S. Congress in 1997 designated Y-12
as the National Prototype Center.
