Energy and water
conservation is everyone's responsibility, and there is no better place for individuals to
conserve these resources than at home. The Desert House energy and water conservation
project provides valuable insight into the materials and technologies available to make
houses in hot arid regions more energy and water efficient. Many people consider energy
and water conservation as futuristic, impractical or too expensive. Fortunately these
opinions are not supported by the Desert House project. Using readily available materials
and proven building techniques, the Desert House partners have clearly demonstrated that
an energy and water conserving house, inhabited by a typical family, can be operated
comfortably and economically while saving as much as 50% in energy and water. What does energy and water conservation mean to most people? Most people are interested in saving money, and using less energy and water certainly accomplishes this goal. But there is something more fundamental to conservation than the "bottom line". It involves how humans relate to their surroundings. Clean and abundant air and water are crucial to life on earth; using natural resources prudently will support the parts of nature humans cherish. Living in an energy and water efficient house like the Desert House will help preserve what is so dear to all life. |
