Household appliances are partly responsible for making the American lifestyle relatively easy and comfortable, and since they use up to 40% of the household energy budget, choosing energy-efficient models saves not only energy, it saves money on operating expenses. Cooking and preserving food, washing dishes and clothing, and keeping cool in the summer and warm in the winter are all accomplished with the use of household appliances. The Desert House has all the appliances found in the typical American home. Energy use and cost of operation are important, but initial purchase price, size and service record are also important.

To approximate closely the kinds of appliances found in the typical family home the Desert House was outfitted with mid-priced appliances with water and energy saving features. All were chosen from The Most Energy Efficient Appliances, 1992-1993 edition. Consumers can determine the energy efficiency of appliances by carefully reading the yellow energy guide labels found on all new appliances or by consulting the appropriate edition of The Most Energy Efficient Appliances, published by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, Washington, D.C.

Gas appliances are also energy rated and many are very energy efficient. There is no gas service to this area so no gas is used in the Desert House.
