In December 1997, the Decontamination and Decommissioning Focus Area changed its name to the Deactivation and Decommissioning Focus Area. The D&D Focus Area is part of DOE’s Office of Science and Technology. Since its inception, the D&D Focus Area has addressed the technological needs for both deactivation and decommissioning within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management, but the focus area’s original name captured only part of its mission. The new name better reflects the D&D Focus Area’s mission of providing continued service to both elements of the EM program: the Office of Environmental Restoration and the Office of Nuclear Materials and Facilities Stabilization. Information about the D&D Focus Area is available on its Web site at http://www.wpi.org/doe/focus/dd.
