ASTD selects new projects for 2000 The Accelerated Site Technology Deployment program is entering its third year with the competitive selection of 12 new projects for expediting environmental cleanup at DOE sites. This years projects emphasize deactivation and decommissioning technologies for deployment at DOE sites that are slated for early closure. Originally known as the Technology Deployment Initiative, ASTD was started in 1998 to provide incentives and support to field offices to promote multisite deployment of proven technologies and processes. This year, the program required that DOE sites submitting proposals commit to providing half the deployment costs, complete projects within two years, and work with other sites to secure at least two subsequent deployments of proposed technologies. ASTD is proving its value in many ways. Not only is it improving site baselines through the deployment of better, faster, and less expensive technologies, but its also encouraging sites to work together to ensure additional deployments of technologies across the DOE complex. As each technology that is supported by the program is deployed at increasing numbers of sites, DOE improves its return on investment, which ultimately lowers the overall cost of DOEs cleanup challenge. For example, the 51 projects selected during FY98 and FY99 generated 17 deployments during 1998, 57 deployments during 1999, and 55 deployments in 2000nearly 130 deployments from the original FY98 and FY99 ASTD projects. Several projects that entered the ASTD program in FY00 are also generating a stream of original and subsequent deployments throughout the DOE complex. Currently, there are more than 250 deployments planned during FY01 and beyond. For more information on ASTD, see the ASTD home page at http://id.inel.gov/astd.
