IUOE snapshot

In 1987 the IUOE established a comprehensive hazardous materials training program for its members, contractors, and government workers. The organization has 230 active instructors who have trained people at more than 70 training sites in the U.S. and from mobile training units. Training includes classroom instruction in hazardous waste operations and emergency response, as well as a variety of hazardous materials-related topics, such as radiation safety, industrial hygiene, and decontamination procedures. Special emphasis is given to protection in the handling, removing, and disposing of hazardous materials and waste. Students are outfitted in appropriate chemical-protective clothing and breathing apparatus, then apply the skills of their respective trades in simulated situations under the direct supervision of qualified instructors.

The IUOE National Hazmat Program has trained personnel with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Departments of Energy and Defense, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. IUOE also responds to the training needs of virtually every DOE and defense contractor at all major weapons and research facilities in the United States.
