DOIT committee has busy summer

The Federal Advisory Committee to Develop On-Site Innovative Technologies (DOIT) was involved in myriad activities during July. The committee is composed of representatives from western states, the Departments of Defense, Energy, and Interior, and the Environmental Protection Agency. The Western Governors' Association and the Office of Management and Budget are ex officio members.

Some DOIT summer activities included the following.

•  
• Western state regulators met to discuss interstate cooperation on permitting environmental technologies;
• A steering group was initiated to plan a stakeholder roundtable scheduled in the early fall;
• The Mixed Waste Working Group has scheduled a Site Implementation Team meeting at Idaho National Engineering Laboratory;
• The subgroup on permitting of the Mixed Waste Working Group held a follow up teleconference to the June Implementation Conference in Albuquerque to discuss interstate cooperation on permitting technologies for advanced oxidation and thermal desorption at Rocky Flats. Western state regulators planned to discuss this at their July 14th meeting;
• DOIT sites at Rocky Flats, McClellan Air Force Base, Williams Air Force Base, Hill Air Force Base, and Port Hueneme held site implementation planning meetings or teleconferences;
• Department of Defense has moved funding to the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona for demonstrating technologies for remediating unexploded ordnance on the surface. A drafting team was scheduled to meet in late July or early August to scope the site plan; and the Corps of Engineers and community leaders were briefed at the Black Hills Army Depot where redmediation technologies will be demonstrated for subsurface unexploded ordnance.
