Three guides and one report published in September 1994 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and available free of charge, may interest Initiatives readers. Each guide contains abstracts of policy, guidance, and technical assistance documents; a summary of relevant regulatory mechanisms; descriptions of related databases, hotlines, catalogs/bibliographies, and dockets. The report documents and analyzes the selection and use of innovative treatment technologies in EPA's Superfund Program and at some non-Superfund sites under the jurisdictions of the Departments of Defense and Energy. The titles and identifying numbers for all four documents are:
Ground-Water Treatment Technology Resource Guide (EPA/542-B-94-009)
Physical/Chemical Treatment Technology Resource Guide (EPA/542-B-94-008)
Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) Treatment Technology Resource Guide (EPA/542-B-94-007)
Innovative Treatment Technologies: Annual Status Report (Sixth Edition) (EPA 542-R-94-005)
Each treatment guide contains an easy-to-use matrix of documents related to guidance and workshops, technology overviews, studies and demonstrations, and study results. Other resource guides are also listed. The publications listed in these matrices are organized by technology type, contaminants, and originating organization or author. The matrices in the three guides range in size from four- to six-page foldouts and contain as many as 115 references which correspond to the abstracts inside the documents. Instructions for ordering documents listed in the guides are provided as well as telephone numbers and operation hours for EPA headquarters and regional libraries.

The yearly status report on innovative treatment technologies was formerly published twice a year. The status of most projects has been updated, and projects selected in fiscal year 1993 Superfund Records of Decision are included. According to the report's abstract, "... the information will enable technology vendors to evaluate the market for innovative technologies in Superfund for the next several years."
The report includes an overview explaining alternative and innovative treatment technologies, plenty of graphic illustrations, and matrices describing site-specific activities by technology including contacts and telephone numbers. To order the annual report, mail your request to:
