INTERNATIONAL CLEANER PRODUCTION INFORMATION CLEARINGHOUSE

Case Study #267

1. Headline: New technology reduces effluent discharges in a

French pulp and paper plant.

2. Background: The AUSSEDAT-REY paper mill took advantage of

a site restructuring to adopt a new technology to decrease

the pollution discharged into the Vienne river. This case

study was carried out in 1994.

3. Cleaner Production Principle: New technology

4. Description of Cleaner Production Application:

Information about the process and wastes

The SPSV company decided to triple its capacity for

producing paper pulp (from 440 to 1100 t/day). A survey of

the Vienne river water quality showed it was necessary to

reduce COD discharges in half. In order to meet this

objective, and despite the increase in production, the

paper mill altered the treatment at the source of

pollution, by means of :

an extended continuous heating process,

washing using a washing press,

an alteration of the bleaching sequences,

the condensates stripping and recycling.

The continuous digester with extended heating ensures

maximum lignin removal. Thus, less lignin is in the

bleaching stages is reduced, leading to a significant

decrease in its derivates contained in the effluents.

Using chlorine dioxide instead of chlorine reduces the

discharges of organo-halogen compounds coming from the

bleaching sequences by a factor of 15.

Using a washing press ensures a decrease in the water

consumption and chemical products. The quantity of

dissolved organic and inorganic matters is reduced by 75 %

at this level.

Decrease in the water consumption by 30 %.

Decrease in COD contained in the discharges by 50 %.

Contribution to the public image of the company, by means of

its decisive participation in the action plan of the Water

Agency for the Vienne river water quality.
