Environmental Science & Technology, Jan 1994 v28 n1 p136(6) Mutagenicity and chemical analysis of emissions from the open burning of scrap rubber tires. David M. DeMarini; Paul M. Lemieux; Jeffrey V. Ryan; Lance R. Brooks; W. Williams. Abstract: The Salmonella mutagenicity assay was used in studying the mutagenic and chemical effects of the combustion of scrap rubber tires. Organic extracts were bioassayed using dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent and the resulting assay was incorporated to the TA98 Salmonella strain. The composite sample was compared with three strains of Salmonella. Results showed a mutagenic activity that is relatively higher compared to the combustion of fossil fuels. Strains without the S9 attributed their high mutagenic activity to the presence of aromatic amines. Article A14962339
