Environmental Action Magazine, Fall 1994 v26 n3 p4(1) Beyond Burning Tires. (Environmental Action Foundation report, 'Beyond Burning Tires: The Case for Crumb Rubber Modifies Asphalt,' that encourages use of discarded automobile tires for road pavement) Full Text: COPYRIGHT Environmental Action Inc. 1994 Americans throw away 275 million old tires each year, casting them off into vast stockpiles that can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitos or that can ignite into uncontrollable toxic fires. In "Beyond Burning Tires: The Case for Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt," a new action paper from EAF, experts make the case for recycling tires into road pavement. The action paper traces the legislative battle that would mandate some use of rubberized asphalt in federal highway projects as well as profiles states now successfully using the material. The 12-page report, 9th in a series on solid waste topics, examines the potential for creating jobs at tire reprocessing facilities and explores other new uses for worn-out tires.
