Fact Sheet: Virginia Waste Minimization Program (Vol. 1, Issue 13)

Waste Exchanges

Waste exchanges are information clearinghouses, usually non-profit, public organizations supported by state governments, that provide opportunities for companies to sell surplus materials, by-products, and wastes. Waste exchanges aid industries in finding other firms that are able to reclaim or reuse unwanted materials. Exchanges often provide information, research, and educational services that promote the development of safe and economical waste management strategies as well as supporting services and products as a means to encourage companies to reduce their waste streams. In rendering these services, waste exchanges are able to recycle waste materials back into the manufacturing process. By participating in waste exchanges, companies can minimize waste disposal costs, reduce the need for landfilling. and increase the value of their wastes, by-products, and surplus and off-specification materials.

Waste exchanges usually provide catalogs that list wanted and available materials as coded, classified advertisements. For persons that desire updated information about wanted or available materials, some exchanges have on-line catalog listings that are accessible to anyone who has a computer. modem, and appropriate password. Some exchanges also offer referral services for those firms that require assistance in recycling their wastes.

Listed below are waste exchanges and their addresses.
