NC DOT Sustainability Exhibits

Roadside Improvement & Beautification
Don't pick the wildflowers! Visit a "live" wildflower bed and plant exhibit and learn more about how the NCDOT's Roadside Environmental Unit and Office of Beautification is improving and beautifying roadsides. Pick up some information on NCDOT's anti-litter efforts and join the Swat-a-Litterbug team!

Project Development & Environmental Analysis
Take a tour of a live "wetland"-provided by DOT's Roadside Environmental Unit-and learn about NCDOT's Project Development & Environmental Analysis Branch's wetland and stream restoration efforts. View pictures from the department's historical and cultural preservation efforts, including rail stations, bridges and other historic buildings throughout the state.

TeleDOT….Telework….Tell a Friend!
In February 2000, Secretary David McCoy announced his goal of implementing teleworking for 10% of NCDOT's Raleigh-based workforce-about 250 employees-by July 2000. Nearly 200 employees have qualified for entry into TeleDOT. Meet a teleworker and help NCDOT spread the word about the benefits of teleworking, including the reduction in traffic congestion, decreased wear-and-tear on our highways, and improved air quality. Tell your friends that if just 250 employees teleworked four days each week, pollution levels would be reduced by 2.3 million pounds annually (based on an average commute of 30 miles daily).

Resource Conservation
Visit this hands-on exhibit from NCDOT's Resource Conservation Unit to view and touch materials made from recycled products used in highway construction, including scrap tires and plastics. Also, learn more about two new exciting programs- NCDOT's Partnership with Habitat for Humanity to deconstruct selected homes located within the department's rights of way and re-use the materials; and the Aluminum Highway Sign Reclaiming Program (through a partnership with the Department of Corrections) which will enable NCDOT to use aluminum highway signs over and over again.

NCSMARTLINK
Log onto NCSMARTLINK and view live pictures from traffic cameras from the Triangle Transportation Management Center in Raleigh. NCSMARTLINK, www.ncsmartlink.org, is NCDOT's headquarters for its Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)-the application of computer technology to transportation. ITS is an environmentally-friendly alternative to highway construction and reduces traffic congestion by improving mobility and safety for motorists.

Create the Future
In 1999 NCDOT, in partnership with regional transportation agencies, took steps to improve congestion for the region by initiating a congestion management study for one of the area's most important transportation arteries-Interstate 40. Visit this exhibit to learn more about the strategies recommended for additional examination in the first part of this study, which include managed lanes, ride sharing and transit improvements. See how you can help "create the future" by reducing transportation demand.

Take the Train!
Climb aboard the train to visit family or friends, see museums, attend sporting events, go shopping or visit the State Fair. Visit NCDOT's Rail Division's exhibit to pick up schedules and information on North Carolina's state-owned Piedmont-which provides daily-round trip service from Raleigh to Charlotte-and the Carolinian-which provides daily round-trip service from Charlotte to Raleigh with continuing service to Washington, D.C. and New York City. Learn why travel by train is a viable and fun alternative to driving!

Alternative Fuel Vehicles (Located along Jones Street)
NCDOT is committed to improving air quality by reducing dependence on fossil fuels through the use of vehicles powered by alternatives to gasoline. NCDOT currently has 59 alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) in operation throughout the state and plans to acquire 40 additional AFVs in 2000. There will be five trucks on display, powered by electricity, biodiesel fuel, compressed natural gas (CNG), propane (LPG), and ethanol.
